Drinking does seem to be a common activity in both musicals and opera. My last production before Brigadoon was The Flying Dutchman with Opera San Jose. The men of the chorus had a drunken scene at the top of Act III. In fact, in this picture, I'm the guy second from the left taking a big swig out of a bottle.
Alas, in Brigadoon I'm confined to my candy cart, so I haven't been able to enjoy the ale. Yet.
