Review: AMTSJ's The Lion King
Well, actually it's a touring production, but why quibble.
I mostly have one thing to say: PLEASE KEEP THE AISLES!!!!
If you don't go to the San Jose Center for Performing Arts that means nothing to you, but if you do, you're probably nodding your head in agreement. See, the CPA is just one big sea of seats with aisles only on each far end of the row. To get to any seat you have to start on one end and make your seat, and if your seat is in the center you probably have to climb over 20 or 30 people.
But for this tour of The Lion King they actually took seats out and made 2 more aisles, so the animals could do their regular procession down the aisles and up on the stage during the opening number.
It makes the theatre much more pleasant, and I wish they'd keep 'em. But I've already heard they won't, so I'm just spitting in the wind. Or something like that.
Anyway, here's my review of the show as posted at my personal blog. You stillĀ have 3 weeks to see it, and I'd recommend it.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I heard that because the bldg. is a Frank LLoyd Wright structure, the city is very limited on changes it can make to the design.
Well, according to this, it's designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. BUt I couldn't find anything citing that as a reason. ALthough I must say I found remarkably little online about this topic at all.
Thanks Ray...I did not know that about Wright's connection.

Thanks to a friend who works at AMT, I was able to see the show on a comp (yay!). Anyway, my first comment on entering the theater was to turn to my friend and say "PLEASE KEEP THE AISLES!"
Unfortunately, he said they're going to be putting the seats back in as soon as The Lion King clears out.
Sigh...
