Cyndi Lauper as Jenny Diver?

I say "sure!"

Apparently Cyndi is set to make her Broadway debut as Jenny in a new Broadway production of Threepenny Opera next Spring. It's now been almost a dozen years since FMT did Threepenny. (Ragtime's Cath Sheldon played Jenny then.) Yikes. Time flies.

Anyway, I saw Cyndi live last year for the first time, and was pretty much blown away by her talent and skills.

That performance and her last couple of albums indicate to me that she has a really powerful, rangy voice, and the ability to sing with not only raw power, but real vulnerability and poignancy.

Count me as a Cyndi supporter! What do you think?

Peace.

Good Will.

Good Cheer.

Good egg nog.

And a free, clean place to pee.

OK, yes, crass. I know. Have you heard that our winter show is Urinetown? I'm just getting you in the mood :)

Learn something new every day

Did you know that Joanna Gleason (Into the Woods, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) was married to Susan Sarandon's ex- Chris Sarandon (Princess Bride, and now playing in The Light in the Piazza.)

I had no idea.

I found out by listening to a podcast interview with Gleason, released by the American Theatre Wing. They have a whole series of these podcasts with all sorts of fascinating people. They're available over at the Itunes Music Store or on the ATW site.

(Oh, and her dad is Monty Hall! Who knew?)

Foothill Alums Out in the World...all over! (Plus Into the Woods Review)

There are numerous Foothill alums out there plying their acting trade this holiday season.

Diane Milo is revisitng the world of 50's girl group singing in A Taffeta Christmas at the Tabard Theatre Company. Playing throughout December.

Mary Melnick will be taking on Abigail Adams in the musical 1776 at Saratoga Drama Group. Scott Bang is playing Thomas Jefferson. (And I may be missing other Foothill alums in the extensive cast list.) The show opens in late January.

Finally there are several Foothill alum in TheatreWorks' production of Into the Woods, including Robert Brewer as Jack, James Monroe Iglehart as the Wolf/Steward, Martin Rojas-Dietrich as Cinderella's Father and Kristin Stokes as Snow White/the Harp. It's a wonderful production, and my extended review is here at my personal blog.

Foothill Alum Out in the World: Ray Renati

Ray Renati has let me know his next project is over at the Bus Barn Theatre in Los Altos:

Ray will play role of Chet Pazinski in the play, OVER THE TAVERN, by Tom Dudzick.

Here's the show blurb:

This intelligently irreverent comedy about growing up Catholic in 1950’s America was written by the same author who brought GREETINGS! to the Bus Barn stage in 1999. OVER THE TAVERN is a beguiling and hilarious tale as seen through the eyes of Rudy Pazinski, a precocious 12-year-old boy who’s starting to question family values and the Roman Catholic Church.

The show is playing January 19 — February 11, 2006, and here's where to go to buy tix online.

Congrats Ray!
